I Admire My Own Leadership Style - 1536 Words

Leaders are all around us. They come in all shapes and sizes, gender, ethnicities, and religions. Mother Teresa is a catholic nun who committed her life to working with the poor throughout the world and is a leader I admire. Her leadership approach, purpose in life, and values are evident in her humanitarian work and are traits I want to emulate in developing my own leadership style. On August 26, 1910 Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia with the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Not much is known about her early life, but when she was only 8 years old, Agnes father suddenly died and she grew much closer to her mother. Agnes mother was a compassionate woman who greatly cared for others and had an open invitation for people of the city to eat in her home. When Agnes asked why people were eating with them, her mother responded, â€Å"Some of them are our relations, but all of them are our people.† The attitude of Agnes mother and her care towards others as Agnes grew up is likely what inspired her in her future endeavors. At age twelve Agnes was convinced that she should commit herself to a religious life and at eighteen years old set off to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin and became a nun. It was there that she took the name Sister Mary Teresa. Shortly after, she was sent to Calcutta, India where she was assigned and dedicated to teaching girls from the city’s poorest families at Saint Mary’s High School for Girls. Standard Conditions Versus Standard State

Standard conditions, or STP, and standard state both are used in scientific calculations, but they dont always mean the same thing. STP, SATP, and NTP While STP is useful for calculations, its not practical for most lab experiments because they arent usually conducted at  0 degrees C. SATP may be used, which means Standard Ambient Temperature and Pressure. SATP is at 25 degrees C (298.15 K) and 101 kPa (essentially 1 atmosphere, 0.997 atm). Another standard is NTP, which stands for Normal Temperature and Pressure. This is defined for air at  20 degrees C (293.15 K, 68 degrees F) and 1 atm. There is also ISA, or International Standard Atmosphere, which is  101.325 kPa, 15 degrees C and 0 percent humidity, and ICAO Standard Atmosphere, which is atmospheric pressure of 760 mm Hg and a temperature of  5 degrees C (288.15 K or 59 degrees F). Which One to Use? Usually, the standard you use is either the one for which you can find data, the one closest to your actual conditions or the one required for a specific discipline. Remember, the standards are close to actual values, but wont exactly match real conditions.

Chemicals That Could Make You Fail a TSA Swab Test

If youre flying, you may get pulled aside by a TSA agent for a swab test. Also, your baggage may get swabbed. The purpose of the test is to check for chemicals that might be used as explosives. The test cant check for all the chemicals that might be used by terrorists, so it looks for two sets of compounds that can be used to make many types of bombs: nitrates and glycerin. The good news is the test is highly sensitive. The bad news is nitrates and glycerin are found in some harmless everyday products, so you could test positive.   Getting swabbed doesnt seem to be particularly random. For example, some people get swabbed nearly every time they fly. This may be because theyve tested positive before (possibly related to a penchant for making smoke bombs and other small pyrotechnics) or because they meet some other criteria. Just expect to be swabbed and be prepared. Heres a list of common chemicals that may cause you to test positive. Avoid them or else be ready to explain the test result, because it can take a while for TSA to complete its evaluation of your belongings, which can translate into a missed flight. It wont speed the process. Youre likely going to get patted down by an agent of the same gender who will also empty your bag for additional testing. Theres a chance your luggage may get pulled, although this rarely happens; its also unlikely that you will miss a flight because of the test. Be aware of chemicals in your environment and able to trace your steps to help TSA identify the source of the triggering compound. Sometimes you wont have any idea why you flagged the test. But, careful attention to hygiene may help you avoid the situation. The best advice is to arrive early enough before your flight to get through security. Try to avoid the problem, plan for it, and dont overreact if it happens to you.

The only way that an artist knows if his artwork communicates a message is when he receives feedback,† she added. Some people are reluctant to engage with art maybe because they do not want to allow a communication with it. Dr. Cole talked about a case: â€Å"A student came to me after class and told me about a collage assignment; he was trying to work on it but it was very difficult to do and he could not finish it. We can put people in front of a challenge and some will say: ‘Okay let’s do it. ’ Others will react the opposite way, refusing to do it when in fact, they are reacting to their fears. † â€Å"Art can serve as inspiration to awaken the imagination, talent and skill hiding in someone. It can unlock your fears and insecurities about creating,† Prather wrote. Hendry corroborated this, saying, â€Å"This is why art is important to me in my life. All those thing —inspires creativity, discovers hidden talent and unlocks fears and insecurities — have helped me and helped my students. † Anna Reyner, an art therapist, wrote the article â€Å"Art Influences Learning† in which she said, â€Å"Much has been written about how art enhances creativity, imagination, and self-esteem, but far less is said about how art encourages cognition, critical thinking, and learning. † She mentions the U. S. Secretary of Education report, â€Å"The Value Added Benefits of the Arts,† which states, â€Å"Studies have shown that arts teaching and learning can increase student’s cognitive and social development. The arts can be the link for students in developing the crucial thinking skills and motivations they need to achieve at higher levels. † In the same article Reyner wrote, â€Å"Our current education system places great emphasis on academic development. As a result, arts programs are being reduced or even eliminated from classrooms to accommodate more didactic teaching methods. Broadly speaking, are common people aware at the importance of art as a part of children’s education? Dr. Cole opined, â€Å"If they are not exposed to art, they are not going to be able to do anything. † Dr. Cole said, â€Å"My students have to go to museums as a part of the class requirements, but a lot of them are not interested and are reluctant to do the assignment. If you are not exposed to art, it is likely the next generation will not be exposed to art either. † â€Å"Politics is more advocates trying to make money,† Hendry commented. Consequently, art is not a priority in the line of their funding. † Art is present in everyday routines in many ways. Many people are aware of it while others are not; still others are indifferent. Promoting the benefits of art could be a difficult task. â€Å"To promote art,† Dr. Cole said, â€Å"we have to expose people to art, encourage them to visit museums, and also educate gallery personnel to bring friendly treatment. Some people go to museums and get out angry because of the bad treatment by the personnel. She decides to camp while they are on there way to Farquads kingdom and during the wedding vowels with Farquad, she wants to skip it when she see the sun setting. One example of Princess Fionas feistiness is Shrek rescues her, but doesnt slay the dragon, which he is meant to do first. Fiona speaks to Shrek in a modernised way with a different tone to her voice: You didnt slay the dragon? Shrek responds: Its on my to-do list. This is a fine example, especially when Shrek plays the same game as her. It is obvious that Shrek and his sidekick Donkey are the heroes of the film. Shrek becomes jealous of Farquad and tries to stop the wedding between Princess Fiona and Lord Farquad. Donkey helps him with his plan. Shreks succeeds when Princess Fiona gets exposed to the sun set when she turns into an ogre, just like Shrek. Lord Farquad wants them dead, so they both fight Farquads men, but they cannot win. Donkey saves the day when he and the dragon they didnt slay destroy the men and the dragon eats Farquad. Shrek and Fiona kiss and then Fiona turns into a ray of light and then stays the same. A touching moment in that scene when Fiona says shes ugly, but Shrek says shes beautiful which enlightens her. The film includes a whole host of fairy tale characters, which Disney now uses. DreamWorks can get away with it because the movie is a parody and Disney did not create the characters shown they were characters (and legends) created decades and centuries ago, many by book authors. DreamWorks also makes fun of Disney. What makes Shrek a classic in its own right is that it successfully pokes fun at other animated movies and past fairy tales (Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, etc. ) while subtly presenting itself as a fairytale at the same time. Shrek also includes spoofs from other movies. Some examples are When Tinkerbell falls on Donkey and he says I can fly and people around including three little pigs, go say, He can fly, he can fly it is referencing Disneys Peter Pan movie. When Donkey is flying he says You might have seen a house fly, a super fly, but I bet youve never seen a Donkey fly. This is a reference to Disneys Dumbo. When Shrek crosses the bridge to the Castle and says, Thatll do, Donkey, thatll do he is referencing the movie Babe. Fiona singing to blue bird is a reference to SnowWhite and the Seven Dwarfs. Princess Fiona fighting the Merry Men is a lengthy reference to The Matrix. Transformation scene at the end strongly references Beauty and the Beast. Gingerbread Man at the end with a crutch (and one leg) saying, God bless you everyone is a reference to little Timmy in A Christmas Carol. Shrek is a colourful film, which is meant for kids, but adults too can join and see the fun that Shrek has to offer. The characters also reflect their vocal talents. Shrek is an ogre, big, just like Chris Farley who was supposed to do the voice of Shrek. But he passed away so Mike Myers took over. Playing Shreks sidekick is a donkey named Donkey. For the voice, the Shrek team selected Eddie Murphy. Murphys last experience as a voice over artist came in Disneys Mulan where he played Mulans sidekick, Mushu the Dragon. Eddie Murphy, who is funny, clever and finds a solution to every situation uses over the top acting. The use of color is suggestive of fairytale scenes. Pastures and woods are very green, flowers are very bright, and sunsets are very golden. In contrast, Lord Farquads town is gray, suggesting boredom and fitting with his character. The evil castle is dark and haunting, as is the surrounding land. Lots of red and black are used in the castle scenes, to convey the danger and heat from the fiery pits. The evil dragon is first seen as black but then when you realize that its a girl, her real color is revealed. Realistic camera framing and movement is used effectively too, and include a wide shot of the village, camera height and tilt to the reveal bad guy, tilt to reveal the height of castle, Over the Shoulder two Shots, Point of View and close-ups.
